Battery Innovation Group Inks Public-Private Partnership with NSWC Crane

Agreement provides for BIG partnership with the NSWC Crane Center for Industrial and Technical Excellence

(CRANE, Ind., March 7, 2016) The Battery Innovation Group, LLC (BIG) can utilize the world-class battery research labs and equipment at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) as a result of a new agreement.

The technology transfer (T2) agreement, called a Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence (CITE) partnership, establishes a public-private partnership between NSWC Crane and BIG, allowing for use of NSWC Crane’s battery testing and evaluation capabilities at its facility and fostering cooperation between NSWC Crane and industry as well as regional economic development.

“We are excited about adding another strategic agreement to our T2 portfolio,” NSWC Crane Commanding Officer, Captain JT Elder said.  “Agreements of this nature foster cooperation between the Department of Defense and private industry and help to reduce cost and maximize capacity.”

BIG is an Indiana-based company focused on providing a range of services to the commercial energy storage industry including testing and certification, contract manufacturing, and product marketing.  For customers who are seeking commercial certifications for their energy storage products from a qualified National Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), the UL Battery & Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Test Center is located in the same facility and operating on site to complete UL Certifications.

BIG has a strategic partnership with the Battery Innovation Center (BIC) to conduct commercial for-profit work using the BIC facilities. The BIC is a public-private partnership and not-for-profit organization that incorporates leadership from universities, commercial enterprises, and government organizations to focus on the rapid development, testing and commercialization of safe, reliable and lighter weight energy storage systems for commercial and defense organizations.  Located adjacent to NSWC Crane, BIC provides both a virtual collaborative network of capabilities needed for development of next generation energy storage solutions as well as a new, state-of-the-art, $15.6 million energy research lab with a wide range of energy storage research manufacturing, and testing and evaluation capabilities.
